Hill Country

Kandy · Nanu Oya · Haputale · Ella · Badulla

The Main Line climbs through tea country and changing mountain weather. Kandy–Ella is the long classic; Nanu Oya–Ella is the shorter scenic section to consider when the full route is uncertain.

Coast

Colombo · Bentota · Hikkaduwa · Galle · Matara · Beliatta

The Coastal Line is part beach access, part commuter railway. Ocean views appear in sections; station choice, luggage and the return train matter as much as the photograph.

The lines meet in Colombo, then separate into very different travel days. This diagram shows the relationships between the stations tourists use most; it is not to scale.

Colombo Fort, Kandy, Hatton, Nanu Oya, Haputale, Ella and Badulla. The Hill Country section needs the most careful service check.

The key distinction

A train can exist without an online seat

Sri Lanka's railway has three separate layers. Checking one does not answer the other two.

01

Timetable

Shows a service, its stations and its stopping pattern. It answers: “Is a train listed?”

How to read it ↗
02

Reservation inventory

Shows selected trains and classes with reservable accommodation. It answers: “Can I book an assigned place?”

Ticket decisions ↗
03

Ordinary ticket

May be sold at the station for an operating service. It does not promise a seat in a crowded coach.

If seats are gone ↗
Tickets and reservations

Book the product you actually need

A reserved seat, an ordinary ticket and a timetable entry are different things.

Can every Sri Lanka train be booked online?

No. Online reservations cover selected trains and accommodation. Other operating services may use ordinary station tickets, or reserved inventory may already be gone.

Before booking

  • Online reservations can open up to 30 days before travel and, when available, as close as two hours before departure.
  • Use the passenger identity details required by the booking system; passport details may be required for foreign visitors.
  • Read the collection or printing instructions before paying. The official station list can change.
  • Some booking contexts limit the number of seats per transaction. Check the current rule when booking several passengers.

If nothing appears

  • Check the official timetable first.
  • Try another train, class or date.
  • Ask whether ordinary travel exists on the operating service.
  • For a long ride with luggage, compare a different departure or road transport instead of assuming standing will be comfortable.
A simple decision

What to do when reserved seats are gone

1

Want a guaranteed seat?

Look for a reserved class on the actual train.

2

Sold out?

Try another train, class or date.

3

Still unavailable?

Check whether that service sells ordinary tickets.

4

Long ride and luggage?

Change the departure or mode if standing would make the day poor.

Train classes

Choose comfort, certainty and window access together

The class name does not tell you whether a seat is reserved. Read both parts of the ticket.

Hill Country

The long mountain railway is several journeys

Colombo → Kandy → Hatton → Nanu Oya → Haputale → Ella → Badulla changes character as it climbs. Kandy is a city connection; Nanu Oya is the Nuwara Eliya stop; Haputale and Ella are higher scenic sections; Badulla is the eastern end of the Main Line.

Shorter rides can make more sense than forcing the full route. If a current notice leaves the Kandy–Ella through journey unclear, use the confirmed section you can actually board and keep a road transfer as part of the plan.

ColomboKandyNanu OyaHaputaleEllaBadulla
Kandy → Ella

Can you currently travel from Kandy to Ella entirely by train?

Do not assume that you can. The checked railway restoration notice confirms Badulla–Nanu Oya services; it does not confirm a normal through Kandy–Ella journey. Check the official timetable and reservation inventory for your date before building the whole day around rail.

If the full route is operating

Reserve when available, compare second class with air-conditioned first class, carry only what you can lift and expect the views to change sides on the winding line.

If the full route is not available

Consider a road transfer to Nanu Oya, then a verified Nanu Oya–Ella train. A shorter confirmed scenic section is more useful than an old itinerary.

Nanu Oya / Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya does not have a railway station.

Nanu Oya is the station normally used for Nuwara Eliya. The station is outside town, so allow a road transfer in both directions. This is the detail that causes many route searches to fail.

Platform at Nanu Oya railway station

Use Nanu Oya for Kandy–Nuwara Eliya, Colombo–Nuwara Eliya and Nanu Oya–Ella planning. Confirm the operating section before paying.

Coastal Line

A beach route that also works like a commuter railway

Colombo → Bentota → Hikkaduwa → Galle → Matara → Beliatta is useful for beach towns, but the railway is not an uninterrupted ocean panorama.

Sea views appear in sections. Maradana and Colombo Fort can both matter, commuter peaks can change the carriage completely, and a large suitcase is harder on an ordinary crowded service.

These are long eastbound corridors, different from the Hill Country day trip and different from the short Coastal Line ride.

Why can I see a train but not reserve it?

Not every Sri Lanka train has seats sold online. A service may still run even when it does not appear in a reserved-seat search. Some trains rely partly or entirely on tickets bought at the station. Use the timetable to see what runs and the booking search to see which reserved seats are currently available.

Overnight rail

When to take a night train

Use an overnight service when the distance is long, the operating train is confirmed and arriving early is workable.

Choose daytime for the Hill Country and any route where the view is the reason for taking rail. At night, the useful questions are seat versus sleeper, luggage security, station transport and whether your accommodation can receive you.

Before an overnight train

  • Confirm the train number, departure station and current operating status.
  • Check whether you booked a reserved seat, sleeping berth or ordinary ticket.
  • Keep passport, phone, medication, water and a light layer where you can reach them.
  • If the train arrives very early, arrange your hotel transfer or luggage drop before departure.

Travel practicalities

Make the railway day easier

The best class or route depends on the people, bags and arrival time you are carrying with you.

Luggage

Bring what you can lift. Keep a small day bag with documents, water, medication and chargers; do not block doors or the aisle.

Families

Reserved seats reduce uncertainty on long rides. A shorter confirmed scenic section is often easier with children than a full day with a connection.

Food and water

Carry supplies for long Northern and Eastern rides. Do not assume a platform vendor or onboard option will be available when you need it.

Arrival time

Leave extra time at Colombo Fort or Maradana to find the platform, read a changed board and move luggage.

Crowding

Coastal commuter segments can be much busier than a scenic Hill Country departure. Long-distance reserved travel has a different rhythm.

Toilets and comfort

Plan a long ride conservatively: use the station before departure, carry tissues and keep a layer accessible.

First-time planning

Mistakes that change the whole train day

01

Searching for Nuwara Eliya station

Search Nanu Oya, then arrange the road transfer.

02

Treating timetable as booking inventory

A listed train may have no online reservable seat.

03

Reading sold out as no train

Try another class, departure or ordinary ticket where offered.

04

Assuming first class has the best view

AC and closed windows can make second class better for scenery.

05

Using an old Kandy–Ella schedule

Check the current Hill Country notice and exact date.

06

Ignoring the Colombo station name

Fort and Maradana are separate boarding decisions.

07

Assuming every train has every class

Accommodation belongs to the actual service.

08

Arriving at the last minute

Large stations need time for platforms and luggage.

09

Ignoring commuter peaks

Short Coastal Line rides can be the busiest part of the trip.

Questions travelers ask

Straight answers before you board

Is the Kandy to Ella train running?

The official restoration notice confirms Badulla–Nanu Oya service, not a normal end-to-end Kandy–Ella journey. Check the official timetable and reservation inventory for your exact date.

Does Nuwara Eliya have a train station?

No. Travelers normally use Nanu Oya station and continue to Nuwara Eliya by road.

Do I need to reserve a seat?

A reservation is helpful on longer or popular trains, but not every service has reservable seats. Check the specific train and class.

Why is a train in the timetable but not online booking?

A timetable shows a service; online booking shows reservable seats. The train may have unreserved accommodation, be outside its booking window, or have no seats left online.

Can I buy an unreserved ticket on the day?

Often, when an operating train offers unreserved accommodation. Ask at the station and allow time to queue; a ticket does not guarantee a seat.

Which class is best?

Reserved second class is a useful balance for many scenic journeys. Choose according to the actual train, your comfort needs and available seats.

Can I bring luggage?

Yes, but storage is shared. Bring what you can lift yourself and keep doorways and aisles clear.

Which side has the best views?

On the winding Hill Country line, views move between sides. On the Colombo–Galle run, the sea is generally on the right heading south, although the track changes position.

Are Sri Lanka trains air-conditioned?

Some first-class coaches are; many second- and third-class coaches are not. Check the exact train and accommodation before booking.

How early should I arrive?

Leave enough time to find your platform and coach, especially at Colombo Fort or on a busy holiday. Check the operator's ticket instructions.

Can foreign visitors book online?

Sri Lanka Railways' reservation system asks for passenger identity details, including passport details where applicable. Third-party availability may differ.

What if reserved seats are sold out?

Check another departure or date, ask about unreserved tickets for an operating service, or plan a road alternative.

Are there sleeper trains?

Night Mail is a service label. Check the actual listing for a seat, berth or ordinary accommodation; do not assume a private sleeper.

Which Colombo station should I use?

Use the station printed on the current train entry. Colombo Fort is the familiar long-distance hub; Maradana is an important origin and call point.
